Privacy and cookies
In short: your progress lives in your browser. We do not ask for an account, a name or an email in order to learn. Below is exactly what happens to each piece of data.
Who is responsible
Kanazora is a personal, free project built and maintained by Mantea Marian, a private individual in Romania. It is not a company and sells nothing.
For anything about your data, write to marian.mantea la yahoo.com. I answer every message about your data.
What never leaves your device
Everything you learn — known characters, review levels, settings, your own card decks, and any audio or images imported from an Anki file — is saved in your browser storage (localStorage and IndexedDB). This data goes nowhere and nobody sees it, myself included.
If you clear your browser data or uninstall the app, it is gone for good. There is no backup I can restore.
Sync between devices (optional)
If you press "Create new code" in Settings, your progress, settings and decks are copied to the app server, into a file named after that 8-character code. The code is random and is not linked to your name, email or IP address.
Anyone who knows the code can read and overwrite that data, so do not share it. The data stays on the server until you ask me to delete it; send me the code at the address above and I will remove it.
Audio and images from imported decks are not synced — they are too large and stay only on the device where you imported them.
Decks published by users
If you choose to publish a deck to the public list, its content becomes visible to anyone, together with the author name you type. Do not put personal data there.
So that one person cannot vote a thousand times, the server keeps a cryptographic fingerprint (a hash) of the IP address, not the address itself. The fingerprint cannot be turned back into an address and is used for nothing else.
You can delete your published deck at any time from the app. You can report an inappropriate deck with the report button on it.
Visitor statistics (Google Analytics 4)
I use Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read. It runs with Consent Mode v2 defaulting to denied: until you accept, Google sets no cookies and does not track your identity. I verified this on the live site: with no consent, no analytics cookie is written.
What I see is aggregated: visit counts, country, device type, pages read. I cannot see who you are.
Advertising (Google AdSense)
The site shows ads through Google AdSense to cover hosting costs. Google may use cookies to serve ads and, with your consent, to personalise them. Your choice is collected in a consent dialog shown by Google in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland.
You can change your Google ad options any time at adssettings.google.com.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Hostinger. Like any web server, it keeps technical logs (IP address, time of request, page requested) for security and debugging. I do not use them for profiling.
Legal basis and retention
Running the app and the server logs rest on the legitimate interest in providing and protecting the service (GDPR art. 6(1)(f)). Statistics and personalised ads rest on your consent (art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
Sync data stays until you ask for its deletion. Published decks stay until you delete them. Server logs rotate automatically, usually within a few weeks.
Your rights
You have the right to request access to your data, its correction, erasure, restriction of processing, portability, and to object to processing. Write to the address above.
If you are not satisfied with the answer, you may lodge a complaint with the Romanian Data Protection Authority (ANSPDCP), B-dul G-ral. Gheorghe Magheru 28-30, Bucharest, dataprotection.ro, or with the authority in your own country.
Children
The app is not aimed specifically at children and asks for no personal data in order to be used. If you are under 16, ask a parent to read this page with you before turning on sync or publishing a deck.
Changes
If something important here changes, I update the date below. Current version: 1 August 2026.
